Lead us not into augmentation

Livestreaming church services is a lifeline for people who can’t go to church during the coronavirus lockdown, but it doesn’t always go exactly as the Roman Missal says it should.

When Paolo Longo, a priest at the Church of San Pietro and San Benedetto di Polla in Salerno, Italy, started livestreaming mass a couple of days ago, he maybe didn’t expect to have a pink mosutache, cat mask, or pair of sunglasses plonked on his face. But he accidentally turned on Facebook’s AR (augmented reality) filters before he started, and the rest is liturgy.

The New York Post reported the good-humoured response of one of Longo’s Italian Facebook followers: ‘You made us laugh, but without malice, only with great affection.’
