The first ever specimen of Australopithecus Afarensis (AL 288-1), better known as Lucy (pictured above in a museum replica), was found today in 1974 in Ethiopia by Donald Johanson. This paleological replacement for Eve as the mother of the human race was named after the Beatles’ ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’, which Johanson and his team played to celebrate the discovery.
