Dwight L Moody (pictured above, bearded, with his Chicago Sunday School class), the American evangelist and leader of a transatlantic revival, died today in 1899. He was a sensation when he toured Britain in the 1870s, with thousands of people gathering to hear him speak. Among his last words were: ‘I see earth receding. Heaven is opening. God is calling me.’
The Dominican Order (or Order of Preachers) was approved today in 1216 by Pope Honorious III, with the publication of his papal bull, Religiosam Vitam. Developing from St Dominic’s preaching mission to try to convert the Cathars, a heretical sect in southern France, the Dominicans effectively became the secret police of the Middle Ages.
