The church listed as Catedral de San Ildefonso, Mérida, Mexico, is not the oldest church in North America or Merida. There is an older (1566) and much smaller one nearby that was/is part of the fort built by the Spanish. It has been open for prayers/services every day since it was built. I have visited both.

To adopt a "Don't ask don't tell" attitude toward receiving communion in a Catholic church is a slap in the face to all Catholics. If you are not Catholic or have not received your first communion there are options. Approach the priest with hands crossed in front of your chest for a blessing.
